Rediscovering the Timeless Appeal of Classical Pilates in Today's World

Joseph Hubertus Pilates referred to his method as "Contrology" although it is commonly known as "Pilates" The term Pilates is not trademarked, which allows anyone to designate their practice as Pilates. For instance, one could simply stand on a rock, clap their hands ten times, and label it as Pilates. This has resulted in numerous interpretations of Pilates, causing confusion not only among the general public but also within the medical field. Many variations exist, some of which are inspired by Pilates yet bear little resemblance to the original method, all sharing the same name. While I do not imply that these variations lack effectiveness—indeed, some are quite beneficial and necessary—they do not accurately reflect the original exercise system created by Joseph Pilates.

"Classical Pilates" typically refers to the style that closely follows the original teachings of Joseph Pilates as outlined in his books like "Return to Life" and "Your Health," as well as what he taught in his studio. Many of his students took the initiative to pass on his methods, training themselves and others in the same way they learned from him. I’ve been trained in this tradition by those very students. On the other hand, Modern Pilates and its various adaptations may stick to similar foundational principles but often incorporate new exercises, tailored workout routines, and different types of equipment. Growing a Pilates studio can be quite tough, leading many to simplify their offerings. This often means dropping more advanced exercises that require skilled instructors, focusing only on reformer or mat classes, adding Yoga poses, or even mixing in movements from other popular fitness programs.

I teach the original exercises developed by Joseph Pilates, following the specific sequence he intended to ensure that each client receives a well-rounded workout for both the mind and body, rooted in power house. I utilize equipment that closely resembles Mr. Pilates' original designs, as I have confidence in his genius and the careful considerations behind his apparatus. My hope is that Joseph Pilates will be proud of my commitment to teach his method.

Life Long Journey

Timeless Appeal of Classical Pilates in Today's World

Classical Pilates is not just a workout—it is a structured, progressive system designed for lifelong mastery. Everything about Classical Pilates is intentional. Each exercise builds upon the previous, preparing the body for greater challenges. There is a lot to learn which takes time and patience.

When we pursue to master anything, we become experts at what we know and apprentices at what lies ahead. Mastery is a journey, not a destination. When I had picked up Classical Pilates, I used to see other practitioner do fabulous stuff, and I hoped that one day I would be good. I think I had the idea that if I worked hard enough, one day it would all be easy. I had no idea that performing at a high level wasn’t the end of knowing about Classical Pilates, but that the study of the system is a lifelong challenge. Each day you work to be better than the day before.

Mind Body Connection

Timeless Appeal of Classical Pilates in Today's World

Another defining aspect of Classical Pilates is its deep mind-body connection. The mind-body connection in Classical Pilates refers to being fully present and aware of one's body movements while performing each exercise. Classical Pilates is not just about moving—it is about thinking while moving, about understanding the body and controlling it with precision. This level of awareness is both intellectually and physically engaging and not only strengthens the muscles but also improves coordination and body awareness. By concentrating on each movement, one develops a deeper understanding of how the body works. Unlike other fast-paced workouts, Classical Pilates promotes quality over quantity, which leads to better posture, flexibility, and overall strength.

Personalized Corrective Workouts

Timeless Appeal of Classical Pilates in Today's World

Classical Pilates isn’t a one-size-fits-all method, its more about designing personalized, effective exercises for each individual, based on their unique needs and goals. Throughout my Pilates teaching career, I have yet to encounter a body devoid of imbalances or weaknesses. Even the most athletic individuals can sustain injuries due to these imbalances. Over time, these discrepancies can significantly affect the body, particularly when engaging in repetitive activities. Classical Pilates offers a holistic approach to fitness that can meet you where you are - where you hold tension, where you need support, and where you need to be challenged - and take you to where you want to go. This focus is what renders Pilates particularly engaging. Each exercise devised by Joseph Pilates serves a distinct purpose, and when performed correctly and consistently, they enhance spinal flexibility and fortify the core.

Timeless Appeal of Classical Pilates in Today's World

Whether Classical Pilates is for everybody or not is debatable but there is no doubt that doing Classical Pilates on a regular basis can bring positive changes in self-image, athletic performance, and the ability to perform daily activities.
