Teaching Classical Pilates to Men: My Journey and Insights

Before establishing my own studio, the majority of my clients were women. However, since I began operating independently, this trend has reversed. Over the past four years, out of the 33 clients I have taught, only 8 have been women. In fact, 75% of those on my client waitlist are men. Each of these men participates in a minimum of two lessons per week, and I can confidently say that I thoroughly enjoy teaching Classical Pilates to them.

Most of these men began their Pilates journey with me due to various injuries or limitations they wished to address, such as lower back problems. I have never marketed Classical Pilates to them as a form of rehabilitation; instead, I encourage them to view it as a functional fitness program. Like any other workout, Classical Pilates focuses on strength, capability, and efficiency in performing everyday movements, such as squatting, bending to pick up objects, getting in and out of bed, and walking or running safely. I ensure that the Classical Pilates sessions are sufficiently challenging, allowing them to understand that they do not need to sweat excessively or experience pain to feel they have had a productive workout. Simple techniques, such as teaching them to lift a single leg while maintaining pelvic stability and engaging their core, have proven to be enlightening for them.

Some of these men have previously engaged in fitness routines that involved heavy lifting or adventurous activities like parkour, yet I have not encountered any issues with ego; they are receptive to learning from me. I encourage them to ask questions, as I have found that continuous talking is not beneficial. Instead, I communicate my instructions clearly and focus on correcting one aspect at a time, providing just the right level of challenge while refining specific movements. I have noticed that when I help them recognize the progress they have made—demonstrating movements they could not perform before starting Pilates—they become enthusiastic advocates for the practice.

Another important aspect of Classical Pilates that i teach my male student is enhancing mental well-being. The focus and concentration demanded during Pilates lessons can aid men in achieving greater mental clarity and managing stress effectively. The mind-body connection fostered through Pilates promotes mindfulness and alleviates anxiety. Given that men frequently face significant stress from work and other responsibilities, Pilates serves as a valuable opportunity to reconnect with their bodies and enhance mental health. Techniques for synchronizing breath with movement are integral to Pilates, providing effective strategies for stress management and mental wellness.

Teaching Classical Pilates to Men: My Journey and Insights

The challenges associated with Classical Pilates are consistent across genders; the primary obstacle lies in demonstrating its true benefits to men. Classical Pilates is inclusive and serves as an effective workout for all.
